World Book Day – The Perfect Time to Think About Bookcases

Posted on February 15 2018

With World Book Day on the horizon on the 1st March, what better time to celebrate books and all the fantastic things they have to offer? From amazing authors to incredible illustrators, books and reading have made such a positive impact on the world that having a mini library at home has become a prerequisite in many households.

Having a selection of books at home can give you and your family a place to retreat to when you need to relax or escape, but storing them isn’t always so straight forward. How many bookcases should you have? Which room should they go in? And should your child have their own one in their bedroom?

Well, things are about to get a little easier, because here at The Really Good Oak Shop we’ve come up with the top things to consider when buying the perfect bookcase for your home.

  1. Consider size

Whether you’re looking for a family sized bookcase or something smaller for a child’s bedroom, the size of your new bookcase is an important consideration. Some families like to store all their books together in one place, while others have so many publications that virtually every family member has their own one! If you’re lucky enough to have a room dedicated to books, you might even consider having a bespoke wall to wall bookcase made.

  1. Make sure it’s sturdy

While flat pack furniture has its positives, it’s fair to say it’s nowhere near as robust as solid oak or pine. If you have small children, you’ll be extra conscious of whether a piece of furniture can fall and cause an injury, so picking something that is sturdier can help prevent these accidents.

  1. Consider material and style

There are many different styles of bookcases, from the decorative ladder bookcases to the more traditional oak and pine ones. Have a think about how many books you have to store and whether your initial ideas work and consider the kinds of materials you like. If your house is full of oak or pine, a lacquered bookcase may seem out of place, so taking your other furniture into account can help you decide what to go for.

  1. On display or hidden away

Some people like to show off their book collection, while neat freaks may prefer a bookcase with doors. Luckily, there are furniture companies who can create bespoke bookcases that tally exactly with your needs and requirements. All you have to do is ask.

  1. Durability

On your furniture search, don’t forget to consider how long you want the piece of furniture to last. At The Really Good Oak Shop, we’d always recommend investing that little bit more and getting solid wood furniture rather than veneer and MDF. That’s because we think all household furniture should stand the test of time and not break or peel after a few weeks, particularly if it is getting a lot of use.
